Cigar Ads that ignored Risk Management

15 Oct 2023 - Vintage smoking ads from bygone eras often appear comically absurd today, portraying people confidently smoking cigarettes and cigars as if they held the key to eternal coolness. These exaggerated ads, depicting smokers in unlikely scenarios like visiting the doctor or becoming suave secret agents, serve as a reminder of how over-the-top advertising once glamorized smoking to an extreme extent.

In this episode, Austin's choice of cigar, the H. Upmann A. J. Fernandez, features a medium to full-bodied blend with an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, Criollo ‘91, and Piloto Cubano fillers, offering a balanced taste with delightful hints of cocoa, spice, and roasted nuts. Meanwhile, Dice is enjoying The Banker Day Trader by H. Upmann, rolled at the renowned Tabacalera de García factory in the Dominican Republic. This cigar boasts a medium body, focusing on balance and delivering flavors of toasted cedar, an earthy core, and subtle notes of nuttiness and cream.

The selection of these fine cigars posed no risk management concerns, as they were great choices. While the study of risk management is often mentioned in leadership discussions but not deeply explored, the two hosts, both passionate cigar enthusiasts, aim to change that by sharing various insights on the subject. Risk management, in essence, is the process of identifying, assessing, and mitigating potential risks to minimize their impact on an organization's goals and objectives, involving the creation of strategies and contingency plans to protect against unexpected events that could impede success or result in losses.

Tune in to gain a deeper understanding of risk management, enjoy a laugh at vintage tobacco advertisements, and don't forget to savor a fine cigar. Feel free to share your thoughts on Instagram or via email.
